Put your faith into action

Based on the Book of James, chapter 2, verse 19: Do you think it is enough to just believe that there is a God? Move beyond that. Be like Abraham, and put your faith into action, and become a friend of God.

The devil believes that there's a God. He knows – he knows only too well! And, I mean, that was evidenced right from the beginning of Scripture with his temptation in the Garden of Eden, and also in the temptation when Satan took Jesus onto a mountain and tempted Him three times. The devil recognises who God is.

In verse 22, do you see how faith was confirmed by his action, and by his action his faith was made complete? And in verse 23, the Scripture which was fulfilled – this is the Old Testament Scripture: "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted, imputed unto him for righteousness, and he was called a friend of God."

Why? The thing which justified Abraham in God's sight is not just that he believed in God, but the fact that he believed enough to obey God because of his actions in the Old Testament. Salvation in the Old Testament came with Abraham because he believed God and acted in faith.

What Does James 2 Teach About Faith, Demons, and Abraham?

James 2:14-26 teaches that genuine saving faith is inherently active, distinguishing intellectual assent from transformative obedience. James contrasts the non-saving monotheistic belief of demons with the active, obedient faith of Abraham to establish that faith without corresponding works is dead.

1. The Theological Fallacy of Mere Intellectual Assent (James 2:19)

  • The Claim: In James 2:19, James writes, "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that – and shudder."

  • The Contrast: Satan and demonic spirits possess orthodox theological knowledge – demonstrated during the temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11) and encounters throughout the Gospels – yet their knowledge lacks submission, love, and repentance.

  • The Principle: Mere cognitive recognition of God's existence (notitia and assensus) is insufficient for salvation without personal trust and surrender (fiducia).

2. How Abraham’s Works Completed His Faith (James 2:21–23)

  • The Action: Abraham offered his son Isaac on the altar (Genesis 22), demonstrating that his faith was not merely theoretical.

  • The Synergy: Verse 22 states that faith was active together with his works (synergia), and by actions his faith was made complete (eteleiōthē).

  • The Fulfillment: This act fulfilled Genesis 15:6 ("Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness"), proving that his earlier legal declaration of righteousness was authentic and visibly vindicated.

According to James 2:21-24, Abraham was justified by works because his sacrificial obedience in Genesis 22 provided public vindication and maturity to the faith he received in Genesis 15:6. While demons possess factual monotheism without submission, true biblical faith inevitably produces actionable obedience.
