Draw near to God

Based on James chapter 4, we are instructed to resist the devil and draw near to God.

“Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the Spirit He caused to live in us envies intensely?”

That is profound – the Holy Spirit within us, the very Spirit of Christ, jealously desires our devotion. This is strong language because God does not accept divided loyalty. We are faced with a definitive choice: we either choose God, or we choose the world.

Verse 6 reassures us that “He gives us more grace.” That is why verse 7 instructs us so clearly: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Many people spend endless time overcomplicating spiritual warfare, but Scripture keeps it simple: resist the devil and take your stand against him. The enemy retreats when you stand firm in God.

Then verse 8 continues: “Come near to God and He will come near to you.” The choice is yours. Draw near to Him, just as the Lord promises: “If you seek Me, you will find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”

What Does James 4 Teach About Resisting the Devil and Drawing Near to God?

According to James 4:5-8, spiritual victory over the enemy requires two simultaneous actions: submitting to God and actively resisting the devil. Scripture teaches that God jealously desires our undivided devotion, but He provides the grace necessary to overcome worldly compromise.

Key Takeaways from James 4:5-8

  • God Demands Undivided Devotion (v. 5): The Holy Spirit within believers desires complete loyalty; God does not accept compromised allegiance with the world.

  • Grace Precedes Obedience (v. 6): God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble, empowering believers to stand firm.

  • Spiritual Warfare is Grounded in Submission (v. 7): Resisting the devil is only effective when paired with submission to God's authority.

  • Proximity to God Requires Action (v. 8): Spiritual intimacy is reciprocal – when believers draw near to God with an undivided heart, He draws near to them.

1. God’s Jealous Longing for Our Devotion (James 4:5)

"Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the Spirit He caused to live in us envies intensely?" (James 4:5)

The Holy Spirit residing in the believer desires total, undivided devotion. In Biblical terms, spiritual friendship with the world is hostility toward God. Believers are confronted with an explicit choice: devotion to God or conformity to worldly values.

2. The Foundation of Grace (James 4:6)

God does not leave believers to fight spiritual battles through human effort alone. Verse 6 confirms that “He gives us more grace.” This divine empowerment is given to those who approach Him with humility rather than self-reliance.

3. The Two-Step Pattern of Spiritual Warfare (James 4:7)

"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)

Spiritual warfare in Scripture is simple and direct:

  • Submit to God: Align your will, actions, and heart under God’s lordship.

  • Resist the Devil: Stand firm against temptation, deception, and spiritual opposition.

When believers take an intentional stand anchored in Christ, the enemy does not merely leave – Scripture promises he will flee.

4. The Promise of Divine Nearness (James 4:8)

"Come near to God and He will come near to you." (James 4:8)

Intimacy with God is an intentional pursuit. Drawing near to God mirrors the promise found in Jeremiah 29:13: "You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart." God honors wholehearted devotion with His presence.
